Good antique condition. The central image remains well preserved with sharp lines and strong, unfaded ink. The paper has naturally darkened with age, while the mounting shows wear and damage around the outer edges. The printed centerpiece itself has very little damage and displays beautifully. Measures approximately 91 × 28 cm.
This original late Edo-period Buddhist hanging scroll, dating from approximately 1800–1868, depicts Fudō Myōō (不動明王), the Immovable Wisdom King, seated upon a rocky pedestal before a blazing halo of sacred flames. He holds the traditional sword that cuts through ignorance and the rope used to guide sentient beings toward enlightenment. At his side stand his two youthful attendants, Kongara Dōji (矜羯羅童子) and Seitaka Dōji (制吒迦童子), forming the complete Fudō Sanzon (不動三尊) composition.
Fudō Myōō is one of the Five Wisdom Kings (五大明王) of Esoteric Buddhism and serves as a powerful protector of the Buddhist faith. Revered for his unwavering determination, he represents the strength required to overcome ignorance, temptation, and worldly attachments while guiding practitioners along the path to enlightenment.
The flames surrounding Fudō are known as the Garuḍa Fire (迦楼羅炎), symbolizing the destruction of illusion and spiritual impurity. His sword represents wisdom that cuts through delusion, while the rope signifies compassion, drawing all beings toward salvation. Together with Kongara Dōji and Seitaka Dōji, the composition expresses both the fierce and compassionate aspects of Buddhist protection.
Hanging scrolls of this type were commonly enshrined in temples, mountain ascetic halls, and private Buddhist altars throughout the Edo period. They served as devotional images for prayer and meditation, while also being believed to provide protection from misfortune and spiritual obstacles.
