Very good antique condition. The scroll exhibits slight water damage that is only noticeable upon close inspection. Otherwise, it has been well preserved with an attractive appearance for display. Measures approximately 125 × 35 cm.
This original hand-painted Buddhist hanging scroll dates to approximately 1890–1920 and is signed 和養斎六十二歳画, meaning "Painted by Wayōsai at the age of sixty-two." Accompanied by the artist's red seal, the inscription reflects the traditional Japanese practice of recording an artist's age as a mark of experience and artistic maturity.
The painting depicts Kannon Bosatsu (観音菩薩) seated peacefully in meditation upon a lotus throne, surrounded by auspicious clouds and a radiant halo. Revered throughout East Asia as the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Kannon is believed to hear the prayers of all beings and respond to those suffering with wisdom, mercy, and protection.
Buddhist devotional scrolls such as this were widely commissioned for temples, family altars, and tokonoma alcoves during the late Meiji and early Taishō periods. While preserving the traditional iconography established during the Edo period, artists refined their techniques through the use of carefully layered mineral pigments, delicate brushwork, and subtle shading that gave religious paintings greater depth and elegance.
The lotus throne upon which Kannon sits symbolizes purity emerging from the imperfections of the earthly world, making it one of the most enduring symbols in Buddhist art.
