Good condition overall with some insect and water damage consistent with age. The printed lines remain sharp and the black ink has not faded. The visible wear adds strong historical character and authenticity to the piece. Presented in a new A3 frame with acid-free backing and UV protection to help prevent further deterioration.
This late Edo-period ukiyo-e print by Katsukawa Shunshō depicts two celebrated sumo wrestlers of the Eastern division (Higashi / 東方).
The wrestler on the right is Nijigadake Sōmaemon, ranked Sekiwake and associated with Awa Province, while the wrestler on the left is Fudenoumi Kin’emon, a Maegashira wrestler from Kokura. The artist’s signature, Shunshō ga (春章画), appears clearly in the lower left margin.
Produced circa the 1780s during the height of Edo-period sumo popularity, prints like this were created for fans who followed famous wrestlers much like modern sports celebrities. The Katsukawa school became especially influential for its lively and recognizable portraiture of Kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, helping establish the visual conventions of early sports imagery in Japan.
The bold poses, exaggerated physiques, and strong linework reflect both the physical power of the wrestlers and the dramatic visual style favored by late Edo audiences.
A historically important and visually striking example of early sumo ukiyo-e, suitable for collectors of Japanese sports history, Edo-period prints, and Katsukawa school works.
