1790 Ukiyo-e of Ichikawa Danjuro By Utagawa Kunimasa. Brand new A3 Preservation Frame
Original Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kunimasa, dating 1790 in the Edo period. Good condition overall considering he age. Uniform darkenning of the paper as well as minor insect damage are present, but do not detract from the attractiveness of this print. The lines remain sharp, and the colors vivid. The print depicts Ichikawa Danjuro V in a dramatic mie pose during a kabuki performance, a signature expression of intensity and theatrical presence.
This work was produced approximately one year before Danjuro V changed his stage name, placing it firmly within an early and desirable period of his career. Actor prints from this era are closely associated with the rise of kabuki culture and urban entertainment in Edo.
Kunimasa, an early member of the Utagawa school, is known for his bold and expressive actor portraits. The composition emphasizes strong linework and dynamic posture, with the figure commanding the space in a classic kabuki stance.
The print retains vivid color and sharp lines, indicating a well-preserved impression. Age-related wear is present, including insect damage and general darkening of the paper, but the image remains clear and highly displayable.
The print is presented in a modern A3 frame with UV-protective glazing and acid-free backing, providing both preservation and immediate display.
A strong example of early kabuki-e, combining historical significance with visual impact.
