1801 Buddhist Religious Text "Miracles of Kannon" Illustrated by Tsuruga
Good condition overall. Some insect damage is present, but all pages have been reinforced with a hard backing for preservation. The cover shows slight friction wear, only noticeable upon close inspection. Interior pages retain very sharp linework, and each page features an illustration.
This Edo-period illustrated religious text, Miracles of Kannon (観音霊験記), was published in 1801 (Kansei 13). The work centers on miracle stories associated with Kannon, the Buddhist deity of compassion, a popular subject in devotional literature of the time.
The illustrations are attributed to “Tsuruga,” likely a pseudonym, as it was not uncommon for artists to remain anonymous or use alternate names when contributing to religious works. In certain contexts, illustrating such texts was considered modest or secondary work, depending on sect and period conventions.
Printed using traditional woodblock techniques, the book combines narrative text with continuous visual storytelling, with illustrations appearing on every page. The sharpness of the interior linework highlights the quality of the original carving and printing.
A solid example of Edo-period religious publishing, suitable for collectors of Japanese Buddhist texts, illustrated books, and early woodblock printing.
