1830 "Youth With Falcon" (若衆と鷹) By Utagawa Kunisada (Approximately 70X25CM)
Good condition overall with minor signs of age. The paper shows uniform darkening, with very little insect or water damage. Colors are well preserved with minimal fading, and the printed lines remain sharp. The print has been backed with a hard support, as it was previously mounted to a wall in an Edo-period house. The cartouche is no longer visible, having been trimmed during mounting.
This Edo-period woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), circa 1830, depicts Wakashū to Taka (若衆と鷹, “Youth with Hawk”). Published by Sanoya Kihei (Sanoki Kikakudō), the composition reflects the refined elegance and stylized beauty characteristic of Kunisada’s work.
The tall, narrow format enhances the verticality of the figure, emphasizing both posture and costume detail. The subject, a young man accompanied by a hawk, draws on themes of status, discipline, and cultivated aesthetics associated with falconry in Edo-period culture.
Printed as a nishiki-e (full-color woodblock print), this piece demonstrates strong craftsmanship in both line and color, remaining visually striking despite its age and history of display.
A well-preserved and historically interesting example of Edo-period ukiyo-e, particularly notable for its large format and unique provenance.
