Original Japanese ehon (illustrated book) from the late Edo period (circa 1847–1848), featuring artwork by Utagawa Kunisada, one of the most important and prolific ukiyo-e masters of the 19th century.

This work centers on themes from Nichiren Buddhism, particularly the story of Kishimojin, the child-eating demon who is ultimately redeemed and converted to Buddhism. The narrative reflects moral transformation, compassion, and religious devotion—core themes in Buddhist literature of the period.

The book includes detailed illustrations depicting figures such as Kannon and Gozu Tennō (referred to here as a demon king), rendered in Kunisada’s refined and expressive style. The imagery combines dramatic storytelling with religious symbolism, typical of Edo-period illustrated texts.

The cover page is printed in color, while the interior pages are monochrome woodblock prints, as was standard for many ehon of this era. Kunisada’s linework is especially crisp, and the compositions remain clear and engaging.

Despite some insect damage, the book remains structurally sound and visually strong, with excellent detail preservation. Works of this type are increasingly sought after for their combination of literary, religious, and artistic significance.

A compelling Edo-period piece, ideal for collectors of ukiyo-e, Japanese books, or Buddhist-themed art.
