1854 Ichikawa Danjuro Post Suicide Memorial Prints. 3 Piece Set in New A3 Preservation Frames
Original Edo period shini-e (memorial woodblock print) created in 1854 to commemorate the sudden death of the celebrated kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro VIII. Created by Utagawa Hiroshige, Utagawa Kunimasa, and Utagawa Shigenobu
Shini-e were memorial portraits produced immediately after the death of a famous actor. These prints functioned both as public death announcements and commemorative images for fans, and they became an important subgenre of ukiyo-e during the 19th century.
In these portraits, Danjūrō VIII is depicted wearing shini sōzoku, traditional Buddhist mourning robes, including a light blue kamishimo. He is shown reading from a long Buddhist sutra scroll, symbolizing prayers and spiritual preparation for the afterlife.
Danjūrō VIII was one of the most popular kabuki actors of his time, widely admired for his “nimaime” (handsome leading man) roles. His unexpected death at the age of 32 during a theatrical tour shocked the public and triggered a wave of memorial prints. Publishers rushed to produce images like this to satisfy the intense demand from grieving theater audiences.
