1861 "The Courtesan Shiratama" Utagawa Kunisada Kabuki Scene (Approximately 25X37CM)
Original ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), created in the 8th month of 1861 (Bunkyū 1), depicts the courtesan Shiratama.
The central figure, Shiratama, is presented in an elaborate and finely detailed kimono adorned with plum blossom and geometric patterns, reflecting the refined aesthetic of late Edo-period bijin-ga (images of beautiful women). A distinctive red circular window in the background contains a secondary scene or silhouette, a design element characteristic of Kunisada’s later work, adding narrative depth and visual contrast.
Printed in the oban nishiki-e format (approximately 39 x 26 cm), this piece demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship and color layering typical of multi-block woodblock printing during the period. A strong example of Kunisada’s mature style, it is well suited for collectors of Edo-period ukiyo-e and Japanese art.
