Original Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print from 1862 (Bunkyū 2), created by Utagawa Kunisada (also known as Toyokuni III, 1786–1864).

This print depicts the renowned kabuki actor Ichimura Uzaemon XIII in the role of the maid Ohatsu (召仕お初), as identified by the cartouche. The scene captures a dramatic moment from the play Kagamiyama, in which Ohatsu, a loyal servant, avenges the mistreatment of her mistress—a theme centered on duty, loyalty, and revenge.

Kunisada was a master of actor prints (yakusha-e), and this work exemplifies his ability to convey theatrical intensity through expressive poses, refined linework, and bold color use. The composition highlights the emotional weight of the scene, with strong visual emphasis on the character’s role and narrative significance.

The vibrant red tones are characteristic of mid-19th century prints, enhanced by the use of aniline dyes that became increasingly popular during the late Edo into Meiji periods, giving the work a striking visual presence.

Condition shows minor insect and water damage, along with some cracking along the edges, but the image area remains well-preserved. Lines are sharp and colors remain vivid, making this an appealing and collectible example.

A classic Edo-period kabuki print, ideal for collectors of ukiyo-e, actor portraits, and Japanese theatrical history.
