This original 1864 ukiyo-e woodblock print by Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900) depicts the Kabuki actor Ichikawa Gonjūrō in a dramatic role. Kunichika was one of the leading artists of Meiji-era actor prints, known for his bold compositions and expressive portrayals of stage performers.

The figure is shown in a dynamic pose set against a striking red background adorned with cherry blossoms, emphasizing theatrical intensity. His elaborate kimono features a vivid design of swimming carp (koi) among stylized waves, a symbolically rich and visually powerful motif. The actor’s name appears in the vertical cartouche to the left, a typical identifying feature in Kabuki prints.

This is an ōban-size nishiki-e (full-color woodblock print), approximately 36 x 24 cm, and was originally issued as the right-hand panel of a triptych. The use of multiple carved blocks for each color highlights the craftsmanship and layering characteristic of high-quality Edo-period printing.

A strong example of Kunichika’s early work, ideal for collectors of Kabuki-themed ukiyo-e and Japanese theater art.
