Original Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print from 1877 by Toyohara Kunichika, one of the leading artists of late Edo and early Meiji period kabuki prints. Kunichika is well known for his vivid actor portraits and dramatic compositions capturing the intensity of kabuki theater.

This print depicts the actor Nakamura Shikan in the role of Hojo Tokimasa, a powerful historical figure often portrayed in kabuki drama. The composition highlights Kunichika’s signature style, with expressive facial features, bold lines, and strong use of color to convey theatrical presence.

Kabuki actor prints were highlysought after in their time, serving both as art and as promotional imagery for performances. Today, they are valued for their historical and artistic significance, especially works by major artists like Kunichika.

The print exhibits signs of age, including some larger insect holes and overall toning of the paper, but retains sharp detail and vibrant color. It has been newly framed in a clean A3-sized frame (30 × 42 cm), making it immediately suitable for display.

A compelling and authentic example of 19th-century Japanese kabuki art, ideal for collectors of ukiyo-e, theater history, or Kunichika’s work.
