This Meiji-era ukiyo-e woodblock print by Toyohara Chikanobu, published in July 1878 by Tsunashima Kamekichi, depicts Aoyama Kari Kōkyo Onō no Zu (《青山仮皇居御能ノ図》, “The Grand Noh Performance at the Aoyama Temporary Imperial Palace”).

The composition documents an actual imperial event held on July 5, 1878, arranged for Empress Dowager Eishō to celebrate the construction of a new Noh stage within the grounds of the Aoyama Temporary Palace.

The play being performed is identified in the upper cartouches as Shōzon (正尊), a warrior-themed Noh drama. The famous actor Umewaka Minoru I appears on stage in the lead role (shite). In the foreground, the seated figure in Western military uniform represents Emperor Meiji, reflecting the blending of traditional Japanese culture with the modernization of the Meiji state.

Chikanobu was one of the foremost artists documenting court life and modernization during the late 19th century, often combining historical documentation with vivid theatrical presentation.

A historically important Meiji-period print combining imperial history and traditional performing arts, suitable for collectors of Noh theater, Japanese history, and ukiyo-e.
