This Meiji-period ukiyo-e woodblock print presents a celebrated spring view of Shimizu-dō in Ueno Park, one of Tokyo’s most famous locations for cherry-blossom viewing. The composition captures visitors enjoying the blooming sakura surrounding the historic temple pavilion, reflecting the longstanding Japanese tradition of hanami, or flower viewing.
Although Hiroshige passed away in 1858, his landscape designs remained enormously popular, and Meiji-era publishers continued producing prints based on his famous compositions and stylistic approach. These later works helped preserve the visual language of Edo-period landscape prints during a time when Japan was rapidly modernizing.
The scene retains the elegant balance typical of Hiroshige landscapes, combining architecture, seasonal atmosphere, and small human figures within a harmonious natural setting.
