1890-93 Meiji Era Kabuki Scene by Kochoro Kunimasa (Approximately 25X37CM)
Original Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada III (Later known as Kochōrō Kunimasa), dating to circa 1890–1893 during the Meiji period.
The print depicts the legendary kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō IX in his iconic role as Musashibō Benkei from the famous play Kanjinchō (The Subscription List), one of the celebrated Kabuki Jūhachiban (Eighteen Great Kabuki Plays).
Benkei is shown in his characteristic yamabushi (mountain priest) attire, including the distinctive white pom-poms (yuigesa) and dark outer robe. The background features stylized pine trees, referencing the traditional stage setting derived from Noh theater, reinforcing the historical and theatrical roots of the performance.
Kunisada III continues the Utagawa school tradition with bold composition, expressive figure work, and strong color contrasts. The print captures the intensity and authority of Danjūrō IX’s performance, a defining figure in late 19th-century kabuki.
Condition is good for its age, with only minor insect and water wear and slight edge fraying. The lines remain crisp and the colors vivid, preserving the visual strength of the image.
A classic Meiji-era kabuki print, ideal for collectors of ukiyo-e, actor portraits, and Japanese theater history.
