1894 Meiji Era Kunichika Kabuki Triptych Woodblock Print Ichikawa Danjūrō IX Dramatic Ukiyo-e Scene
Very good condition with sharp lines, vivid colors, and only minimal age-related wear. Light edge wear and minor insect/friction marks are present but do not detract from the overall visual impact, instead reinforcing its authentic vintage character.
This original 1894 (Meiji 27) triptych woodblock print by Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900) captures a dramatic moment from the classic Kabuki play "Imoseyama Onna Teikin" (Mount Imose: An Exemplary Tale of Womanly Virtue). Kunichika, a leading figure of Meiji-era ukiyo-e, was celebrated for his dynamic actor prints and vivid portrayal of Kabuki theater during its golden age.
The composition features Kabuki actors frozen in expressive mie poses, emphasizing emotional intensity and theatrical power. The central figure, a commanding samurai with bold kumadori makeup, is portrayed by the legendary actor Ichikawa Danjūrō IX. To the right appears Omiwa, the tragic heroine of the play, adding narrative depth and contrast to the scene.
Designed as a traditional three-panel (triptych) format, the print conveys the scale and drama of a live Kabuki performance. Kunichika’s use of strong color and movement makes this a striking example of late 19th-century Japanese woodblock artistry, ideal for collectors of ukiyo-e and theater history.
