Original Meiji-period ukiyo-e woodblock print by Toyohara Kunichika, titled Kyokaku Harusamegasa (侠客春雨傘), translated as The Chivalrous Person’s Spring Rain Umbrella. Published in June 1897 (Meiji 30), the print commemorates a performance at the Kabuki-za Theater in Tokyo.

The central figure is the legendary actor Ichikawa Danjūrō IX (九代目 市川団十郎) portraying the character Oguchiya Gyou (大口屋暁雨). Danjūrō IX was one of the most influential kabuki actors of the Meiji era, instrumental in preserving and modernizing classical repertory during Japan’s rapid modernization. His performances were major cultural events, and commemorative prints such as this were produced for fans and collectors.

Kunichika (1835–1900), the leading kabuki print artist of the late 19th century, is known for his bold compositions, dramatic close-ups, and vibrant use of modern synthetic pigments introduced during the Meiji period. This work exemplifies his mature style: intense facial expression, strong contour lines, and theatrical presence dominate the composition.

As a dated commemorative kabuki print tied to a specific 1897 Kabuki-za performance, this piece holds particular historical value for collectors of Meiji theater, Ichikawa Danjūrō IX memorabilia, and late ukiyo-e actor portraits.
