Very good vintage condition. There is very little overall wear. Some light creasing from long-term storage is present and would be largely concealed when framed. Any small spots or minor imperfections are only noticeable upon close inspection. Measures approximately 91 × 43 cm.
This original hand-painted hanging scroll, created between approximately 1920 and 1950, is signed 京城慶喜橋 兼望 ("Kanemochi, Kikeibashi, Keijō"). The inscription places the artist in Keijō, the Japanese name for Seoul during the period of Japanese administration in Korea, providing valuable historical context for the work.
The composition presents a tranquil panoramic landscape with a sheltered harbor beneath towering mountain peaks. Temple buildings cling to rocky cliffs overlooking the water, while a walled town with a pagoda appears in the distance. Fishing boats rest quietly along the shoreline, and layers of mist soften the mountain ranges, creating a peaceful atmosphere that draws the viewer through the scene.
Rather than depicting a specific location, the painting follows the long-established literati (Nanga / Bunjinga) landscape tradition. Its idealized mountains, atmospheric perspective, secluded temples, and calm waterways were intended to express harmony between humanity and nature, reflecting the philosophical ideals of East Asian scholarly painting.
During the Japanese colonial period (1910–1945), Keijō developed into an important artistic center where Japanese-trained painters continued the traditions of classical ink painting while drawing inspiration from the landscapes of Korea, China, and earlier Chinese masterworks. Artists often combined traditional brush techniques with idealized scenery to create timeless compositions rooted in centuries of East Asian artistic practice.
Signed by Kanemochi (兼望), this scroll is a fine example of early twentieth-century literati landscape painting, blending elegant brushwork with a serene composition that reflects the enduring influence of classical Chinese and Japanese aesthetics.
