Very good condition overall. Two hairline cracks are present and have been repaired in the past; they are visible upon close inspection but do not affect the structural integrity or display. Some friction damage near the eyes

This Bitchū Kagura mask represents Sarutahiko-no-Mikoto (猿田彦命), the Shinto deity of guidance, crossroads, and beginnings. He is known in mythology for guiding the descent of the heavenly grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu to earth, establishing his role as a protector and পথ-opener.

In Bitchū Kagura performances, Sarutahiko appears at the beginning of ceremonies, performing a ritual dance to purify the space and prepare the stage for the arrival of other deities. His presence is both ceremonial and symbolic, marking the transition into sacred performance.

Hand-carved and hand-painted, this mask is signed by Tanabe Seisuke, a recognized mask maker active in the 1950s–60s. His work is associated with strong craftsmanship and adherence to traditional forms used in regional kagura traditions.

A signed and culturally significant example of kagura performance art, suitable for collectors of Japanese masks, Shinto ritual objects, and mid-20th century craftsmanship.
