Circa 1880-90 Kakejiku Hanging Scroll of Sugawara no Michizane (Approximately 54X155CM)
Good condition with vivid colors and bold, well-defined lines. There is no noticeable fading or friction damage. Some insect damage is present along the edges, but there are no noticeable stains and the image remains clean and visually strong.
This Meiji to early Taishō period hanging scroll (c. 1890–1920) depicts Sugawara no Michizane (天神), the deified scholar and patron of learning, commonly known as Tenjin. The storage tube is labeled “Tenjin-zō” (天神像, “Image of Tenjin”).
Likely produced for shrine or temple use, the work is unsigned, which was typical for religious scrolls of this type, as it was often considered inappropriate for artists to claim credit for devotional imagery.
Rendered with bold linework and durable pigments characteristic of the Meiji era, the composition reflects both accessibility and reverence, intended for display in educational or religious settings.
A well-preserved example of devotional Japanese hanging scroll art, suitable for collectors of religious works, Shinto subjects, and Meiji-period painting.
