Near perfect condition. There are no stains or holes. The printed lines remain exceptionally sharp, and the colors are vivid and well-preserved. There is very slight creasing that is only noticeable upon close inspection and does not detract from the overall appearance.

This original late Edo-period woodblock print was designed by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) between 1847 and 1852. Titled First Snow – Courtesans (初雪 遊女), it belongs to the celebrated Tamoiro (多望色, "Fashionable Colors") series and was published by Izutsuya.

The composition depicts two elegantly dressed women walking beneath a large paper umbrella during the season's first snowfall. The woman on the left is distinguished by her elaborate hairstyle and numerous ornamental hairpins, identifying her as a high-ranking courtesan of the Yoshiwara pleasure district. Her companion carries the umbrella and a wrapped parcel as the pair converse while making their way through a quiet, snow-covered street.

The Tamoiro series celebrated the changing seasons by pairing fashionable women with scenes inspired by everyday life in Edo. Rather than illustrating a Kabuki performance, this design highlights the grace, luxury, and refined fashions of the Yoshiwara, emphasizing the beauty of richly patterned kimono against the subdued tones of a winter landscape.

Kunisada was celebrated for his remarkable ability to depict textiles, hairstyles, and elegant feminine beauty. Here, the intricate garments and elaborate coiffure contrast beautifully with the tranquil snow-covered rooftops and streets, creating one of the series' most atmospheric seasonal compositions.

A beautiful example of late Edo bijin-ga, combining the elegance of Yoshiwara fashion with the quiet beauty of an Edo winter.
