Near perfect condition. The colors remain vivid, and the printed lines are exceptionally sharp. The diptych has been beautifully preserved, making it an outstanding display piece and an excellent example of late Edo woodblock printing.
This original vertical ōban diptych was designed between 1847 and 1852 by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) and published by Jōkin. Titled Ueno Shinobazu Pond in Snow (上野不忍池雪乃景), it combines elegant bijin-ga with one of Edo's most celebrated winter landscapes.
The composition depicts two fashionably dressed women strolling beside Shinobazu Pond during a heavy snowfall. One wears a deep blue winter kimono beneath a large paper umbrella, while her companion is wrapped in a striped hooded cloak (zukin) to protect against the cold. Snow blankets the shoreline, trees, temple buildings, and the graceful arched bridge crossing the pond, creating a tranquil winter atmosphere.
Shinobazu Pond was one of Edo's most famous scenic destinations and a favorite subject of nineteenth-century ukiyo-e artists. Kunisada skillfully combined idealized female figures with celebrated locations (meisho-e), producing compositions that appealed equally to admirers of fashionable beauty and renowned landscapes.
The print also serves as a valuable historical record of Ueno before modern development, faithfully depicting landmarks such as Bentendō, the snow-covered shoreline, and the distinctive bridge that made Shinobazu Pond one of the city's most beloved seasonal viewing spots.
