Very good antique condition for a woodblock-printed book dating to 1860. The black ink remains strong and unfaded, with sharp, clearly defined woodblock lines throughout. There is very little insect damage, primarily confined to the outer edges of the pages and generally not affecting the illustrations. Nearly every page is illustrated, and the images remain remarkably well preserved and visually striking.
Published in 1860 (Man’en 1), this original Edo-period woodblock-printed book is Shinran Shōnin Goichidaiki Zue (親鸞聖人御一代記図絵), or Illustrated Life of Shinran Shōnin. The multi-volume work presents the life, travels, teachings, and important religious episodes of Shinran Shōnin (1173–1263), founder of the Jōdo Shinshū tradition of Pure Land Buddhism.
The work is exceptionally richly illustrated, with woodblock images appearing on nearly every page. The scenes portray Shinran's religious life and journeys alongside temples, landscapes, monks, followers, and important events associated with the development of his teachings.
Shinran remains one of the most influential figures in the history of Japanese Buddhism. His teachings emphasized reliance upon Amida Buddha's compassion and the recitation of the nembutsu, eventually developing into Jōdo Shinshū, which became one of Japan's largest Buddhist traditions.
Illustrated biographies such as this helped communicate Shinran's life and teachings to a broad audience. The extensive imagery made complex religious narratives accessible while also creating a remarkably detailed visual record of how Shinran's story was understood and represented during the late Edo period.
Printed more than 165 years ago, this extensively illustrated book is an impressive surviving example of Edo-period Buddhist publishing and traditional Japanese woodblock craftsmanship.
