Edo–Meiji Period Sugegasa 菅笠 Bamboo Hat (Approx. 50 cm Diameter)
Edo–Meiji Period Sugegasa 菅笠 Bamboo Hat (Approx. 50 cm Diameter)
Fair condition with age-related wear. There is fraying of the bamboo, uniform darkening, and loss of flexibility due to dryness. Some holes are present from material degradation. The chinstrap string is fragile and should not be used for handling. Suitable for display only.
This antique sugegasa (菅笠), a traditional Japanese conical bamboo hat, dates from the Edo to Meiji period. Such hats were commonly worn by farmers and travelers as protection from sun and rain, forming an essential part of everyday rural life.
Handwoven from natural bamboo, the hat reflects practical craftsmanship and regional materials. Due to its age, surviving examples in any condition have become increasingly scarce.
Though no longer suitable for wear, the piece retains strong historical character and presence, making it a compelling display item.
A rare example of traditional Japanese folk material culture, suitable for collectors of rural artifacts, textiles, and Edo–Meiji period objects.
