Fair to good antique condition. The edges of the pages are frayed, with some insect damage consistent with the book's age. There is age-related creasing and an overall darkening of the paper. Despite these condition issues, the woodblock impressions remain sharp, and the illustrations retain their beauty, making this a highly appealing early Edo example.

This original illustrated woodblock-printed book dates to the Genroku period (circa 1686–1704). Bound in the traditional fukuro-toji style, it is an early illustrated edition of the Hyakunin Isshu (百人一首), the celebrated anthology of one hundred waka poems by one hundred poets.

Each opening pairs a portrait of the featured poet with the complete poem in elegant flowing calligraphy, accompanied by decorative borders and finely carved landscape vignettes. The pages shown include poets such as Fujiwara no Okikaze, Fujiwara no Kintō, Emperor Sutoku, and Minamoto no Tōru, reflecting the anthology's broad representation of Japan's greatest poets from the seventh through thirteenth centuries.

Compiled from the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, this anthology became one of the most influential literary works in Japanese history. Illustrated editions were widely read throughout the Edo period, serving both as educational texts for the study of classical poetry and as references for the poems later used in the traditional uta-garuta (poetry card) game.

The woodblock carving, page design, and graceful calligraphic presentation are characteristic of early Edo publishing during the Genroku era, a period often regarded as one of the high points of Japanese printing, literature, and urban culture.

A rare early Edo illustrated edition of one of Japan's most enduring literary classics, combining elegant calligraphy, refined woodblock illustrations, and centuries of poetic tradition.
