Near perfect condition. The colors remain vivid, and the printed lines are exceptionally sharp. The triptych has been beautifully preserved, making it an outstanding display piece and an excellent example of Meiji-period woodblock printing.

This original vertical ōban triptych was designed in 1883 (Meiji 16) by Toyohara Kunichika and published by Fukuda Kumajirō. It portrays the principal actors of a contemporary Kabuki production dressed as historical warriors in a dramatic stage confrontation.

The left sheet features Ina Shirō Katsuyori, portrayed by Sawamura Tosshō, wearing magnificent red samurai armor rendered with extraordinary detail. The center sheet depicts Yamai Sōsuke, performed by Nakamura Kanoko, accompanied by a female attendant, while the right sheet shows another armored warrior confronting the central figures beneath towering pine trees. Together, the three panels capture the tension and spectacle of a climactic Kabuki scene.

Kunichika was the foremost designer of Meiji-period actor prints and is widely regarded as the last great master of yakusha-e. His portraits are celebrated for their expressive faces, elaborate costumes, and brilliant use of imported aniline pigments, which brought unprecedented intensity to Meiji woodblock prints.

Rather than simply illustrating a historical story, the triptych serves as a visual record of a nineteenth-century Kabuki performance, preserving the actors, costumes, and theatrical staging of one of Japan's most celebrated dramatic traditions. The richly decorated armor, dynamic poses, and expressive facial features exemplify the style that made Kunichika the leading theatrical artist of his generation.

A superb Meiji-period Kabuki triptych, combining exceptional craftsmanship with one of Kunichika's most dramatic historical stage compositions.
