Good antique condition. There are some minor tears along the edges consistent with age. One tear has been repaired with tape, though the repair is only visible from the reverse. The paper has naturally darkened over time, while the ink and image remain bold, vivid, and highly displayable. Measures approximately 125 × 40 cm.
This original Meiji-period hanging scroll, painted around the 1890s by Buken (武権), depicts Shōki (鍾馗), the legendary demon-quelling guardian revered throughout East Asia as a protector against evil spirits, disease, and misfortune. Executed in ink with light color on paper, the work captures Shōki standing confidently with his sword, ready to vanquish malevolent forces.
Originally a figure from Chinese legend, Shōki was embraced in Japan as one of the country's most enduring protective deities. During the Edo and Meiji periods, his image was commonly displayed in homes, temples, and samurai residences as a talisman against illness and bad fortune. He was also traditionally associated with Boys' Day (now Children's Day), when paintings and scrolls of Shōki were hung to safeguard children and encourage strength, courage, and good health.
Buken renders the guardian in a bold, expressive style influenced by Zen and literati (Nanga) painting. Rather than emphasizing intricate detail, the composition relies on confident brushwork, energetic ink lines, and simplified forms to convey Shōki's commanding presence and spiritual authority.
The combination of dynamic brushwork, protective symbolism, and Meiji-period craftsmanship makes this scroll both an appealing work of traditional Japanese painting and an important expression of popular religious belief during the late nineteenth century.
