Meiji Era Reprint 1890s Bijin Tōkaidō: Edo Nihonbashi by Keisai Eisen (Approximately 28X40CM)
Meiji Era Reprint 1890s Bijin Tōkaidō: Edo Nihonbashi by Keisai Eisen (Approximately 28X40CM)
Excellent condition overall. There are a few faint humidity spots consistent with age, but no major flaws. The lines remain exceptionally sharp, and the colors are vivid and well-preserved, making this a beautiful display piece.
This hand-printed Japanese woodblock print reproduces Bijin Tōkaidō: Edo Nihonbashi (美人東海道 江戸日本橋), one of the celebrated designs by Keisai Eisen, originally created during the 1830s–1840s.
The scene combines two popular ukiyo-e genres: bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) and meisho-e (famous-place prints). An elegantly dressed woman stands before Nihonbashi, the historic bridge that marked the official starting point of the Tōkaidō highway. In the distance, Mount Fuji rises above a bustling scene of merchants, travelers, and boats, capturing the energy of Edo at the height of its prosperity.
Nihonbashi served as the official zero point from which all distances along Japan's five major highways were measured, making it one of the most important landmarks in Japan. Eisen's composition celebrates both the fashionable culture of Edo and its role as the nation's commercial and political center.
This impression is a high-quality hand-printed woodblock reprint published by Iju Kankōkai. The lower margin credits the publisher, carver, and printer, including master carver Ishii Torao, whose career began in 1962, confirming that this is a modern impression rather than an original Edo-period print.
Unlike photographic reproductions, this print was produced using traditional mokuhanga techniques, with hand-carved woodblocks and hand-printing that faithfully recreate the appearance and craftsmanship of Eisen's original design.
A beautifully executed hand-printed reproduction of one of Eisen's finest bijin-ga, suitable for collectors of Japanese woodblock prints, traditional printmaking, and classic views of Edo.
