Very good vintage condition. The display has been well preserved and presents beautifully. Standing approximately 90 cm tall when assembled, it includes everything shown in the photographs: the ō-yoroi armor, yoroibitsu (armor storage chest), bow and arrows, sword, and gold leaf folding screen (byōbu).
This authentic Shōwa-period Boys' Day armor display was produced by Yoshitoku Dolls (吉徳), one of Japan's oldest and most respected makers of traditional festival dolls and armor displays. The model recreates a Heian-period black-and-red laced ō-yoroi (平安時代 黒糸赤糸威 大鎧) using traditional assembly techniques, decorative silk-style lacing, lacquered components, brocade fabrics, and finely detailed metal fittings.
The armor is modeled after the impressive ō-yoroi worn by high-ranking mounted samurai during the late Heian and early Kamakura periods. With its large shoulder guards, elegant lacing, and imposing silhouette, this style represents one of the most iconic forms of Japanese samurai armor.
Armor displays such as this were traditionally exhibited each year for Tango no Sekku (Children's Day, May 5) as symbols of courage, protection, strength, and the hope that young boys would grow into healthy, successful adults. Rather than being intended for wear, these handcrafted displays celebrate Japan's samurai heritage through meticulous craftsmanship and historical design.
